29 June: Thetis hosts a workshop on stormwater runoff management at the Arsenal
The purpose of the workshop is to present international examples of stormwater characterization and management, discuss the initial evaluations from the studies conducted locally by the Venice Water Authority, and provide information about the methods the Venice Water Authority intends to employ to cope with this particularly delicate and complex issue.
The issue of stormwater runoff has received increasing attention in recent years since it is an important contributor to surface water pollution. Proper stormwater runoff management is therefore viewed, on an international level, as an essential element in reaching quality standards for water bodies.
Since the late 1970s special laws, remediation plans and regulations pertaining to the discharge of wastewater into the lagoon and the drainage basin have been enacted on both the national and regional level to preserve the Venice Lagoon’s delicate environmental balance.
Law 192/2004, which empowers the Venice Water Authority to approve plans to moderate stormwater runoff discharges into the lagoon and regulate such discharges, was enacted as a measure to protect the fragile nature of the lagoon environment.
