Renovation of Building 62 completed
Restoration and renovation work on Building 62 – a former equipment storage building located in the south-eastern section of Thetis’ garden – has been completed. The building will be used for activities relating to the management of the Mose System.
Thetis’ Civil Engineering Division, in collaboration with C+S Studio, created the designs for the project and provided construction supervision on behalf of the Venice Water Authority and Consorzio Venezia Nuova. Several buildings in the Arsenal were improved to make them suitable for housing the centre for the management of the lagoon ecosystem and the maintenance of the Mose System. Particularly with respect to this small building, the improvements ensure the optimal performance of sensitive activities while respecting the building’s value as a historic monument.
The modifications to Building 62, a small factory building also known as the “equipment storage building”, were designed to respect the architectural theme used in the construction of all of the buildings in the Arsenal complex over the centuries – a balance between open spaces that were temporarily occupied by objects undergoing construction or repair and closed spaces that were designed to provide workers with adequate lighting and ventilation for the tasks being performed. The materials and the building services solutions are in line with international energy efficiency standards. Since renewable energy sources have been given preference whenever possible, the design includes plans for geothermal drilling and exterior photovoltaic panels that are fully-integrated into the architecture.
The building will be connected to the centralized building services that serve the entire area. The centralized heating and cooling system includes a water loop that makes use of diffuse energy sources and obtains energy from a renewable source – the lagoon. In addition, a sophisticated water purification system enables large quantities of water to be recovered and reused.
