ITS-TAP project for Beijing, coordinated by Thetis, presented at the UITP world conference in Rome
At midday on 7th June, in Pavilion 32 of the Fiera di Roma (Rome trade fair), the Ministry of the Environment and the UITP held a special conference dedicated to the ITS-TAP project for Beijing. Wolfgang Meyer, Chairman of UITP, Corrado Clini, Chief Executive of the Ministry of the Environment and the Territory, Pan Shuda, Chief Engineer of Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau, Zhi Jun, Vice General Manager of Beijing Public Transport Holdings (BPT), Marino Mazzon, Head of the ITS Division at Thetis and Fulvio Vento, Chairman of Atac all spoke during the conference.
The project is part of the cooperation agreement between the Ministry of the Environment and the Municipality of Beijing, carried out by the Temporary Association of Companies formed of Thetis from Venice (leader), Atac from Rome, Fata DTS (Finmeccanica Group) from Turin and Ecotema from Venice.
The aim of the project is to help reduce traffic pollution in the central area of Beijing. When forecasted that atmospheric pollution will exceed certain limits, dynamic, selective limitation of the traffic entering the “second ring” of the city centre is activated, and the bus service in the area increased. This limitation is dynamic, given that it is temporary and activated when atmospheric conditions reach a certain level, and selective as, at present, it only involves the most polluting vehicles.
The subject system of the supply comprises a network for monitoring air quality; a network of traffic detectors and telecameras for reading number-plates for the 22 roads leading into the area of the second ring; a sophisticated system of satellite localisation; a management system for the fleet of 200 buses run by the BPT; and a Data Centre managing the entire control process.
Operative start-up of the system has been forecasted for 2006.
The buses will link the Olympic Village to the city centre.
