Thetis to present work performed in Libya at the Data Flow: From Space to Earth conference

The “Data Flow: From Space to Earth” international conference will be held on 21-23 March 2011 at Palazzo Franchetti in Venice.

Sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment and the City of Venice, the conference was organized by CORILA, the Venice Water Authority and the Region of Veneto in collaboration with various research institutes and European organizations, including UNESCO, the European Space Agency (ESA), the Network of European Regions Using Space Technologies (NEREUS), the Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, the National Research Council, the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics and the IUAV University of Venice.
“Data Flow: From Space to Earth” was organized to promote the development and use of space applications ranging from Earth observation services to navigation and positioning systems, with a particular emphasis on the European programmes GMES and GNSS (EGNOS and GALILEO).
The conference will focus on the integration of satellite data with Geographic Information Systems as well as regional data interoperability, in accordance with the INSPIRE Directive.
The meeting, which will be held in English, is divided into four sections having specific themes.

Section 4, whose theme is “Application, Themes and Research – New Concepts”, will include a presentation by Paolo Telaroli entitled “Generation of a digital elevation model of the Wadi Lebda Basin, Leptis Magna – Libya” on the afternoon of Monday, 21 March 2011 in the Garden Room at Palazzo Franchetti.
The work that will be presented at the conference was carried out primarily by Thetis' SITE Division in collaboration with Spacedat s.r.l.

In addition, the Conference Proceedings will include an abstract prepared by the Thetis multidisciplinary group involved in the project.

Additional Information:
As part of the "Safeguarding the Sabratha and Leptis Magna archaeological sites – preventing flooding of Leptis Magna from the Wadi Lebda” project developed by Marco Polo Storico Ltd, Thetis SpA was entrusted with regulating the final stretch of the Wadi Lebda, whose mouth is adjacent to the ancient city of Leptis Magna. In order to design the stream modifications, an accurate model of the Wadi Lebda drainage basin’s morphology was required. Satellite images proved to be particularly suitable for this project since a large area needed to be studied in a short period of time and logistics made the use of ground and aerial surveying difficult. The digital model was completed in approximately 3 months, including the ground-based topographic survey campaign conducted in July 2009.
The digital model was combined with detailed bathymetric surveys of the coastal area (performed primarily with multi-beam technologies) and soil characterization studies (to supplement the information system created to support the design of the modifications).
