On the occasion of the 51st Biennial Exhibition in Venice, n-kiloton© by Silvia Iorio is being presented in the Thetis area.
The project n-kiloton©, a unit of nuclear yield, includes a catalogue edited by Mirta d’ Argenzio providing a pocket-handbook of poisonous pigments that complements the mobile installation.

n-kiloton© is an artistic engine made up of strong gears and delicate glass bubbles containing paradoxical art matter: toxic pigment, potentially explosive. Its structure is similar to that of an atom: i.e. that tiny unit capable of determining the physical characteristics of an element.
The toxicological files in the catalogue’s scientific section - compiled in association with the University “La Sapienza” in Rome - are a bulletin of potential catastrophes.
And so colour epitomises n-kiloton©’s capacity to destroy or explode into creativity as well as being a metaphor for the perils hidden in our most commonly used elements, undermining our health and contaminating our environment. The main culprits are pigments, commonly used since the industrial revolution - declared illegal but still today not altogether known and certified for their chemical characteristics and toxicity, often lethal.
The colours orbit and mix in this merry-go-round of a machine, but absence of one of the most controversial pigments averts a potential disaster. But at every turn the colours recombine and the possibility is once again real.
