“Creativity and Sustainability” in Venice
The exhibition, opening on 9 July at 17:30, will feature works in which nature and the environment play a leading role. Visitors will be captivated by the imagination of the artists, who have successfully transformed discarded materials into creative compositions and thereby given the materials new life. The exhibition’s guiding concept is creativity as a resource – using artistic inspiration to explain how the Earth can be saved, fostering a growing rapport between man and nature, and creating a synergistic dialogue that involves people, things, regions and educational institutions, with the objective of stimulating active participation in society.
Spazio Thetis is asserting itself as a place that brings together the old and the new. In fact, the exhibition will be held in the Arsenal, the perfect example of urban redevelopment as it harmoniously combines the Venice of the past with the forward-looking perspective of the environmental engineering company Thetis. In addition, the Brera Academy of Fine Arts was not chosen by chance – an essential element of the Europe 2020 strategy is promoting creative and sustainable knowledge; in this context, universities and institutes of higher education become true “internationalizing” agents that foster progress, the circulation of ideas and people, and the creation of an environmentally sustainable world that must be protected and supported.
The exhibition arising from the partnership between the Academy of Fine Arts and Spazio Thetis is a prestigious event for Venice – the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, which over the centuries has been graced by the presence of artists who had a profound impact on the course of art history both in Italy and abroad, is currently attended by more than three thousand students per year coming from more than 50 different countries. The academy’s cultural vitality is represented by the thirty young artists who were chosen to participate in the exhibition: Matteo Antonini, Elena Baldelli, Raffaele Barbuto, Antonella Besia, Plamena Borisova, Ruggero Brandi, Ester Castelnuovo, Chen Gong, Con-Ta-Ci, Eleonora Corti, 7 cieli, Michele D’Agostino, Agnieszka Daleczko, Pietro Ferri, Pasquale Gadaleta, Giuliano Giagheddu, Collettivo GR. GR:, Samir Hadzic, Tara Kaboli, Karin Kallas, Kappao (Ko Myung Shin), Erica Kraft, Domenico Laterza, Monica Mazzone, Carla Prats, Chiara Rinaldi, Vito Romanazzi, Marco Rossi, Stefano Spera and Ilona Tepljakova.
The exhibition Creativity and Sustainability represents another step forward in the depiction of nature. In the past, artists used paintings, drawings, graphic works, sculpture and photography to deal with the concept of nature and land on an interpretive and creative level. For more than twenty years, contemporary art has turned its interest and sensitivity to green culture, or rather the idea of preserving and respecting the natural world, its landscapes and geography. A new body of artistic heritage has arisen that displays an interest in the environment, its preservation and its relationship with advanced human society – works that denounce environmental dangers, threats and tragedies, as well as the infinite number of victims of man’s lack of civil consciousness. Creativity and Sustainability fits precisely into this context, presenting a series of works that explore contemporary issues with the objective of stirring the consciousness.
Exhibition curated by Filippo De Filippi, Antonietta Grandesso, Angela Occhipinti and Roberto Semprini.
