Climate change: experts from around the world meet at the Venice Arsenal
6 September 2011 – After hosting the IPCC summit in 2009, Venice is once again the setting for a climate change conference. Thetis S.p.A., headquartered in the Venice Arsenal, will host an important international conference entitled “The Venice conference: improving the capacity to assess and to adapt to climate change in urban coastal regions” on 12-15 September 2011. This by-invitation conference provides an important opportunity to analyze and discuss the timely topic of the impact of climate change on urban coastal regions.
Organized by the Venice Water Authority through its concessionary Consorzio Venezia Nuova with the assistance of Thetis and the Sustainability Solution Institute of the University of California at San Diego, the event features prestigious partners including the Cà Foscari University of Venice, Cambridge University (UK), the APRU (Association of Pacific Rim Universities) World Institute (Australia), the European Centre for Environment and Human Health (UK) and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Egypt).
The event brings together leading international experts to exchange knowledge and discuss the best methods to assess the impact of climate change on coastal urban regions and identify suitable adaptation measures for development.
The objectives are to arrive at an agreement on the measures that should be adopted over the medium and long term to reduce urban coastal regions’ vulnerability to climate change and to draft a declaration supported by all of the participating institutions that identifies future strategies to develop.
In this context, Venice provides an important case study as, in addition to being a city of international prominence, it is striving to become a model of sustainable management and climate change adaptation in coastal urban regions.
On 15 September 2011 at 12:00, Thetis will hold a press conference to present the results of the conference, as well as the closing declaration of the international experts regarding the future prospects of Venice and urban coastal regions in general. The event will be attended by Prof. Patrizio Cuccioletta, President of the Venice Water Authority, Maria Teresa Brotto, Chief Executive Officer of Thetis, Prof. Charles Kennel, Director of the Sustainability Solutions Institute at the University of California, and a representative of the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea*.
