Design and creation of an integrated environmental quality monitoring system (soil, subsoil, groundwater, water and fluvial sediments) for potentially contaminated areas on four industrial sites in the Region of Sardinia: Assemini - Macchiareddu, Sarroch, Porto Torres and Ottana. An Environmental Overview (Environmental Characterization Report) was prepared using existing data and information. This overview was used to plan several preliminary studies, which were conducted prior to implementing the analysis and monitoring activities.
Specifically, the following activities were conducted: piezometer drilling and installation, acquisition of geo-lithological samples, groundwater and river water monitoring campaign, collecting soil samples and fluvial sediment samples, and chemical and physical analysis of the samples.
The data generated from the above studies was used to prepare definitive reports and thematic maps.
These field activities enabled a monitoring network, comprised of piezometers and sampling points for water and fluvial sediments, to be set up in the industrial areas under investigation. This network is part of an integrated monitoring system, which incorporates two other essential tools that were developed for the Por Sardegna project (2000 – 2006), Axis 1, Measure 1.7, Action C.
