Country: Medio Oriente

This study is part of an important World Bank project whose objective is the transfer of water from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea. The project envisions the transfer of water from the northern part of the Gulf of Aqaba to the Dead Sea, where it will be used for various purposes: desalinization, electricity production and stabilizing and restoring the Dead Sea’s water level.
The objective of the study is to examine the potential effects that this project may have on the marine environment of the Gulf of Aqaba/Eilat (GOAE).
Thetis, head of the Red Sea project and the contractual representative to the client (World Bank), is in charge of coordinating and managing the project.
Thetis is also responsible for performing the following technical activities: estimating the pollution loads in the Gulf of Aqaba, evaluating the project’s potential effects on the coastal area, and creating the database for the project.
In addition to its important technical and scientific aspects, the project is also significant for its geo-political context. The specific geographic area affected, the countries involved (Israel, Palestine and Jordan) and the issue of water resources management all make this a particularly noteworthy project.
