Thetis is the coordinator of a World-Bank funded project aiming to identify and design adaptation measures for the Carmen-Pajonal-Machona coastal lagoon, located in the Tabasco State, to increase its ecological and socio-economic resilience to climate change and current human activity impacts. Initially the project foresees the analysis of the current state of the following key issues, based on available information and the results of new field activities: littoral erosion and stability, lagoon hydrodynamic and contamination, ecosystem conservation, soil degradation in areas close to the lagoon, socio-economic aspects and infrastructure. Afterwards, climate change related impacts are assessed based on climate change projections elaborated at the regional scale. The second phase of the project aims to identify most vulnerable sites within the lagoon system and design locally-based adaptation measures responding to current and future impacts. Adaptation measures are selected also through the analysis of options implemented or under implementation in similar contexts worldwide. Given the great focus on local aspects, the project considers highly important the involvement and participation of stakeholders and representatives of local communities, in particular to identify major impacts and select the adaptation measures to be design: two interactive workshops are realised to this scope. Finally, the project is excepted to deliver recommendations for institutional strengthening in the field of climate change adaptation.
