Thetis has been involved in the coordination, database development and determination of procedures for the BIOMIT research project, which was approved, financed and awarded by the Region of Veneto with Regional Council Decision 2702 of 10 September, 2004. The project has achieved the objective of transferring advanced and innovative molecular biological and genomic technologies, which have already been applied to diagnosis and research in the biomedical field, for studying and monitoring the coastal environment through the use of Mytilus galloprovincialis (mussels). Thetis, which developed a georeferenced database combining environmental data and genomic data to produce a tool for utilizing advanced techniques for environmental management, contributed to defining a new and interesting quality certification. This procedure, which uses advanced molecular technology – PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) and QRT-PCR (Quantitative Real Time PCR) – facilitates the systematic recognition of contaminated or infected mussels, thereby providing an improved control method for production for the food market. Thetis (group leader), University of Padua (Department of Biology) and CRIBI.
