Candidacy of Venice for the Shanghai Expo 2010 "Better City, Better Life"

Commissioned: Comune di Venezia

Period: 2007 - 2008

Country: Cina

Venice was selected, along with 54 cities including the Italian cities of Milan and Bologna, to present the city's best practices for urban renovation in the “Protection and Utilization of the Historical Heritage” section of the Shanghai Expo 2010 “Better City, Better Life”.
The candidacy for the City of Venice, coordinated by Thetis, includes nine examples of best practices for urban renovation that have been successfully managed in recent years by the City of Venice, which is the promoter of the initiative sponsored by the Fondazione di Venezia.
Thanks to Thetis’ contribution, Venice was selected from a wide range of competitors – 108 candidacies, presented by eighty cities.
Venice's candidacy focused on the renovations of Porto Marghera, the Arsenal and a few smaller, yet strategic, areas. Regarding Porto Marghera, the agreement for the “Chimica” area, Vallone Moranzani, and VEGA (Venice Gateway for Science and Technology) were described. For the Arsenal, the company that was established for its promotion, Arsenale di Venezia S.p.A., the Venice Biennale and Thetis S.p.A were described. The “less important” projects were renovations for public uses (mostly universities), warehouses at the San Basilio free port, the incubator company CNOMV, and San Servolo Island with Venice International University.
Thetis is now part of the work group assisting the city in the management of the communication project, preparation and actual organization of the participation in the Expo, which will last from 1 May to 31 October 2010 and is expected to attract 70 million visitors.
