Period: 2008 - 2010
Country: Libia
The objective is to produce the working drawings and supervise construction for the interventions aimed at counteracting the coastal erosion occurring at the Libyan archaeological sites of Leptis Magna and Sabratha, which is putting extremely valuable historic artefacts and structures at risk. The project provides for the construction of submerged breakwaters, partially integrated with the natural breakwaters, breakwaters and transversal containment groynes for the sand that will flow into the area adjacent to the current shoreline. In order to define a marine meteorological climate reference, highly advanced numerical modelling will be required.
Detailed observations of the coastal area, also entrusted to Thetis, will precede this activity. Bathymetric measurements will be taken with multibeam sonar and integrated with single-beam sonar in the shallow waters closer to the shore. The land will be surveyed by tacheometric methods, employing both classical topographic equipment and GPS.
