ITS study for urban mobility management in Delhi

Commissioned: Ministero dello Sviluppo Urbano (India)

Period: 2008

Country: India

The study was carried out as part of an assistance programme for sustainable mobility in India promoted by the Italian Ministry of the Environment. The study’s purpose was to identify an ITS solution for comprehensive mobility management in Delhi, for the occasion of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
The primary activities performed were:
- defining and evaluating the reference scenario, with collection and analysis of existing data relating to administrative procedures, the traffic/transport system and atmospheric pollution conditions;
- Identifying an ITS solution for the integrated management of urban traffic and air quality;
- preparing the DPR (Detailed Project Report), including the feasibility study and the system configuration.
In addition, the study has led to a recommendation to create a mobility agency, which proposed the drafting of a Master Plan for mobility, coordination of the control rooms with the police, control of the traffic lights to improve traffic flow, creation of an information system for passengers that would make bus arrival times available, and finally management of parking garages.
The Italian partnership, headed by the National Research Council’s Institute for Atmospheric Pollution, includes Thetis and ATAC, Rome’s mobility agency.
