Environmental assessment - river "ramps" and water catchment project in the middle Brenta River

Commissioned: Veneto Acque SpA/Regione del Veneto - Direzione Difesa del suolo

Period: 2003 - 2008

Country: Italia

The project involves preparation of technical documents relating to the Environmental Impact Assessment and the Assessment of Plans and Projects Significantly Affecting Natura 2000 Sites for a few projects that are connected, in varying ways, with the implementation of the Modello Strutturale degli Acquedotti del Veneto Centrale (MOSAV, or Structural Model of the Aqueducts in Central Veneto).
Specifically:
-    drafting of the Environmental Impact Study (EIS) and the Assessment of Plans and Projects Significantly Affecting Natura 2000 Sites for the preliminary design for the middle Brenta aquifer recharge project (wells at Camazzole);
-    drafting of the Assessment of Plans and Projects Significantly Affecting Natura 2000 Sites for the final plan for the experimental intervention aimed at flood lamination and recharging the Brenta River aquifer in the municipalities of Cartigliano and Nove (construction of two “stabilizing ramps” for the riverbed, ramps S1 and S2);
-    drafting of the EIS and the Assessment of Plans and Projects Significantly Affecting Natura 2000 Sites for the final plans for the project aimed at morphological improvement, flood lamination and quantitative protection of the middle Brenta River aquifer (ramps S3, S5, S6, S7, S9).
The following activities are planned for each project:
-    field investigations to map the habitats and confirm the bird species present in areas that could potentially be affected by the work;
-    working together with the project team to determine solutions that will have less of an impact, as well as mitigation and compensation strategies;
-    analysis and assessment of the effects on the various environmental components involved (including through modelling), with particular attention focused on habitats, species habitats and species, as the area involved is located within the SCI/SPA IT3260018 “Grave e zone umide della Brenta” (Gravelly Flood Plains and Wetlands of the Brenta);
- assisting the client during discussions with the Region of Veneto’s Natura 2000 Network and with the EIA Commission and other authorities/institutions (municipalities, provinces, reclamation consortia, etc).
